In 1964, historian Lt. Col. Joseph B. Mitchell published a compact book, Twenty
Decisive Battles of the World, an expansion of Sir Edward Creasy's
most famous work from a hundred years past, updating it into the 20th Century.
Turning Point Simulations (TPS), a division of LPS Inc, examines these 20
battles with a new series of boxed wargames. These games emphasize accessibility
and playability, and come with hard-mounted maps and mounted, die-cut counters.
Each battle is presented in a design of low complexity, but high challenge,
from some of the industry's top designers.
And be sure to check out our sister publication Against the Odds!
While TPS games focus on the decisive battles across time, Against the Odds magazine investigates all of military history from a broad perspective. The economic, political, religious and social aspects of warfare are examined in concert with events on the battlefield. Get yourself truly "connected" with games and gaming by subscribing to Against the Odds! Learn more...
Winter 2024 News from TPS Games!
Greetings,
Some exciting news below about new projects and upcoming releases so let’s dive right in!
We Are Celebrating Our 100th Published Major Release!
And giving you a great "party favor" with any order!
We were pleased to recently discover the combined efforts of both our major brands, Turning Point Simulations, and Against the Odds Magazine added up to hitting the "100th Published Major Release" milestone. So we’re celebrating with ANOTHER new game!
While supplies last, you'll score a FREE copy of our new Britskrieg! game WITH ANY ORDER at the TPS website. No codes. No special passwords. No hoops to jump through.
Britskrieg! is a sweet little game from Lembit Tohver (designer of our Hastings and The Marne games), looking at Operation Brevity, a North African battle that happened May 15-16, 1941. "Brevity" was really designed to set things up for the much-better-remembered Operation Battleaxe that took place a month later. Britskrieg! comes with an 8.5" x 11" map, 54 mounted and die-cut 9/16" counters, and just two pages of rules (plus 2 more pages with optional rules, historical commentary, and notes). Small, but the game still factors in the gaps between tank and anti-tank abilities and the organizational approach to war between the two sides, plus the different AFV types (tankers love that!). The game well models the British Art of War at that time. Fast to get into, clean, with plenty of options for replay.
Literally BUY ANYTHING off the TPS website and we will add a copy of Britskrieg! to your package at no extra charge. However, your order has to be for something we can actually send you now (subscriptions and pre-orders for future releases won't count) and of course, all previous sales are excluded as well.
So What’s New?
The Beyond Vicksburg Refit Pack includes a mini-map, and a sheet of rules plus new counters for a new game, Taken for a Ride allowing players to explore the true impact of Grierson's Raid on the campaign in more detail. This game can be played by itself or as a pre-game to The Vicksburg Campaign. The kit also includes an updated rules book for the base game and new mounted die-cut counters to use with the mini-game.
The Beyond the Maid Refit Pack explores variants to the standard Joan of Arc's Victory game, with “What Ifs” and options, plus a new game, The Siege of Orleans allowing players to explore resolving the opening Siege of Orléans on Turn 1 in more detail, and avoiding the "all of nothing" die roll. This game can be played by itself or as a pre-game to Joan of Arc's Victory. The Pack also includes an updated rules book for the base game and new mounted die-cut counters to use with the variants.
And A Holiday Treat
Speaking of Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years War, at a time when reading books (even great history!) is in decline, we just wanted to call your attention to a remarkable firm that’s using the latest in technology to change the way the game is played by offering audio books. To really delve into military history, audio books are a great complement to classical media.
Publisher Major Intonio, a provider specializing in the field, is now offering a free download to all TPS enthusiasts of their new audio book release The 100 Years War: Battle of Crécy by Hilaire Belloc that you can access here at https://youtu.be/ra9-Wpv4sWo.
Discover the first great battle of the Hundred Years War, a turning point in medieval history. In 1346, Edward III of England launched an ambitious campaign to claim the French throne, raiding northern France up to the gates of Paris alongside his son, the legendary Black Prince. At the Battle of Crécy, Edward faced King Philip VI of Valois in a confrontation that reshaped the future of European warfare.
Major Intonio has graciously made the above title a free download for all TPS enthusiasts from now through December 31st (although you can still donate something to them if you liked it). We encourage everyone to take advantage of this free audio book sample and then check out their other fine offerings.
Plus Something Special
Our original Rattenkrieg Pocket Battle Game (PBG) on a postcard was a bit of a sensation when it first came out. A fast paced solitaire game, gamers kept asking for more. So we’ve reprinted and rebranded the game as Rattenkrieg 1 below:
and we've now added the even tougher and more intense Rattenkrieg 2 game below as well!
During the month of December (or while supplies last), when you order any item off the TPS website, you are presented with the option to select a PBG game. Enter Promotion Code RATT in the promo code field (remember to hit Apply) and pick Rattenkrieg 1 as your free PBG with your purchase and we’ll automatically toss in Rattenkrieg 2 plus die-cut counters for both! What’s not to like?
What’s Also New from ATO Magazine
Our sister division, ATO Magazine, has announced their new Annual with La Bataille de Kulm inside. This game looks at the shattering reverse Napoleon suffered right after his triumphant defense of Dresden in late August 1813. An entire French corps, itself in pursuit of the retreating Allies, instead found itself trapped, and was swept from the field. It was the turning point of the Leipzig Campaign, and the Allied victory at Kulm had a great effect on their morale.
So we’re extremely pleased to share the news that their Kickstarter for La Bataille de Kulm is now live! Launched last month, they’ve had fantastic support so far, and are getting ready even more Stretch Goals. Ever more goodies will make Kulm package better, and they have some "extras" planned for gamer pleasure that we think you will like. (How about a new game? Or two?)
Click on the image above to visit the Kickstarter page for Kulm.
Besides outright support for this project via pledges, you can also help, of course, by spreading the word anywhere you see gamers or Napoleonic enthusiasts. Kulm rules will be structured for "easy entry" to the La Batt system (like their La Bataille de Vauchamps was) and this means it's a chance to "grow the market" and attract new players to the whole La Bataille system. That is a win-win for everyone!
ATO has lots of things to share on its Kickstarter page, insights into the game and the campaign, a discussion of the "mystery man" on the game/magazine cover, and more. They’re keeping tabs on the page and look forward to an active discussion!
OK, that’s it for now. Thanks for reading, and for supporting the TPS game line!
